Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Sister and Friend
Vivian G. Abel, 99, widow of the late John S. Abel, entered into heavenly rest on Saturday, February 20, 2021 at Cheshire House Rehabilitation Center. Vivian was born October 2, 1921 in Naugatuck, daughter of the late Edward S. and Nellie (Downs) McElroy.
Viv was a working mother who retired from Uniroyal Chemical after 47 years. She took pride in her home and enjoyed entertaining family and friends, many times hosting guests who dropped by on the weekend. Rummikub, setback, puzzles and reading were some of Viv’s pastimes. Viv was raised Episcopal but later converted to Catholicism in 1988. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She loved her grandsons fiercely.
She leaves behind to cherish her love and memory, her loving daughter with whom she made her home, Johnna Chin and her husband Jason of Wolcott, her grandsons Jared Chin of New Britain and Jeremy Chin of Wolcott and her beloved dog Moe. Besides her parents and husband, Vivian was predeceased by her brother Edward S. McElroy Jr.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 am on Tuesday, March 9, 2021 at St. Anthony’s Church, 4 Union City Rd., Prospect. Burial will follow in St. James Cemetery, Naugatuck. A calling hour will be held on Tuesday morning from 8:30 am to 9:30 am at Prospect Memorial Funeral Home 72 Waterbury Rd. Prospect.
