Ruth Johnson Obituary

Ruth Mary McCray-Johnson, 89, of Erwin, NC gained her wings on September 17, 2023, at her home in Waterbury, CT. She was born in Erwin, NC on May 18, 1934, the daughter of the late Rev. Barney and Carrie McCray.

Ruth is survived by a son, Ollie J. McCray and wife Valerie of Waterbury, CT, a daughter, Dr. Swiyyah K. Fareed and husband Vernon M. Fareed deceased of Norfolk, VA, and a brother Charles McCray and wife Hattie of Dunn, NC. Ruth has 6 grandchildren: Tyrone Hyman, Jaimie Hunter, Qaid Hyman, Nadiyah Hood, LaRhonda McCray, and Jullanar Shukree, 34 great-grandchildren and 13 great-great-grandchildren.

Ruth was predeceased by a son David Lee McCray of Norfolk, VA, along with 16 sisters and brothers: James Curtis McCray, Thad McCray, James Barney McCray, William (Bud) McCray, Tommy McCray, Robert McCray, John Edward McCray, John Arthur McCray, Neil (Pie) McCray, Maggie Lee Lett, Mary Ella McNeil, Naomi Surles, Betty (Tina) Woodley, Carrie Thorne, Castella McCray, and Mae Anna McCray along with a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Ruth was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She is described by her children as one of the most courageous women they ever knew. Ruth could be a stern disciplinarian at times but not without that stroke of kindness to follow. Our mother’s most understanding characteristic was the loving care she showed to her children and other family members. She always encouraged her family especially the younger group of children to always love each other and treat each other with kindness. One of her favorite sayings was “My head ain’t no garbage can so don’t bring me your trash.” Ruth was no stranger to anyone she encountered. She had a spirit that would calm you down and make you laugh even when you didn’t want to. Ruth was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and held a position as Grand Marshall for a number of years. She retired in 2003 from Southbury Training School in Southbury, CT, after 17 years of service. Ruth became ill in July 2023 but she never gave up, she fought the good fight throughout her journey until the end with her son and daughter by her side.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to all the many expressions of love, concern and kindness shown to them during their time of loss.
